MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) – State prosecutors are now handling the case of a Myrtle Beach man shot by police during a drug raid last year because the man is suing local authorities.
Solicitor Jimmy Richardson tells the Sun News that he’s asked Attorney General Alan Wilson to prosecute 32-year-old Julian Betton to avoid any appearance of impropriety.
Betton was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana after police found drugs in his home during a raid. His lawsuit says plainclothes officers who weren’t identified as police burst through his door before they shot him. Betton says poor execution of that warrant led to events that left him paralyzed from the waist down.
Officers initially said Betton fired first but later admitted that wasn’t true.
