MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The South Carolina Primary did not fail to produce excitement and upsets in 2016.

According to the latest election results, Senator Hugh Leatherman defeated challenger Richard Skipper to retain his powerful seat in the SC Senate despite heavy campaigning against him from Governor Nikki Haley. Another incumbent Senator who Gov. Haley campaigned against, Luke Rankin, won over challenger Scott Pyle.

On the local level, Darlington County Sheriff Wayne Byrd lost to challenger Tony Chavis. Dillon County Sheriff Major Hulon held on to his position with a narrow win over challenger Douglas “Humbunny” Pernell.  Charles Lemon defeated three other challengers handily in the Marlboro County Sheriff’s race.

Several positions in Horry County as well as other local and state races were too close to call at the time of this posting.
