SC police officer shot in head near Columbia

A West Columbia police officer was shot Tuesday afternoon and a person was later taken into custody.

The shooting happened around 3 p.m. on Hudson Street, which is just across the Gervais Street Bridge, WLTX reported.

West Columbia Police Chief Dennis Tyndall told WLTX that his officers were at a home to serve a bench warrant against 51-year-old William Kernan.

Officers say Kernan put his head outside a window, then went back inside the home and fired a shot.

The bullet went though the wall and struck the officer in the head. Tyndall did not identify the officer, but says he was taken to the hospital for treatment and is in stable condition.Just before 4 p.m., a person was seen coming from a home in the area with his hands up, and was taken into custody. It’s unclear if that was the suspect.

Law enforcement could then be seen going inside the home for several minutes.

What led up to the shooting has not been released, and the condition of the injured officer is not yet known.

The State Law Enforcement Division has also responded to the scene, which is standard protocol anytime an officer is shot.
