CONWAY, S.C. – A Father’s Place will stage a poverty simulation at Horry Georgetown Technical College to create a better understanding of the realities of daily life on the poverty line.
The goal of the simulation is to show how early parenthood from unintended pregnancy can be a direct path to a life of poverty.
South Carolina has the 13th highest teen pregnancy rate in the nation and nearly half of children born to teen parents grow up in poverty.
Up to 75 participants will be assigned roles and circumstances they must manage and navigate a mock village where they must spend money on necessities and pay bills and deal with the inevitable conflicts and obstacles that arise.
The simulation will be held in Building 300 Room 110 on Wednesday, July, 20 from 2 to 5 p.m. As an incentive to increase participation of teen parents, young men and women ages 15 to 24 years who are pregnant or parenting will receive a gift card.
Interested parties are invited to register by calling A Father’s Place at 843-488-2923.
