ANDERSON, SC – Former volunteer for NewSpring church, 23-year-old Chaz Wood, has been charged with one count of Criminal Sexual Conduct with a Minor by the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office.
NewSpring says he was a volunteer at the Anderson campus, but is no longer associated with the church.
According to the arrest warrant, Wood fondled a 10-year-old boy on December 6, 2015 and was arrested in February of 2016.
Wood has been in the Anderson County jail since February on a $100,000 surety bond.
NewSpring Church released the following statement:
NewSpring Church was contacted by law enforcement on January 7, 2016 and notified that Chaz Wood, a volunteer, was under investigation for criminal sexual misconduct with a minor. While we were grieved to learn about these charges filed against Wood, the safety and protection of minors attending our church was our first priority. Wood was removed from his volunteer role within 1 hour of our knowledge of this investigation. Since that time, NewSpring Church has fully cooperated with law enforcement.
To date, law enforcement has not communicated to NewSpring Church that any crime or criminal behavior occurred at a NewSpring location.
