GREENVILLE, S.C. – Officials say a suspect in a Wednesday morning chase in Greenville County was killed in a crash while trying to get away.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol says a trooper tried to pull over a vehicle on White Horse Road that was suspected to be stolen. The vehicle had a broken window and a paper tag, according to authorities.
The suspect pulled over in a parking lot around 9:30 a.m., but then drove away.
The trooper started to chase the vehicle, but then stopped because of heavy morning traffic and the suspect’s reckless driving.
The Highway Patrol says the trooper continued to drive down White Horse Road and found the suspect crashed into another vehicle near Old Grove Road.
The suspect was killed during the wreck. He has been identified as John Marquese Hampton, 29 of Piedmont. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the other vehicle was injured and taken to the hospital. The extent of that person’s injuries has not yet been released.
Although a stuffed animal could be seen on the road next to the passenger side tire of the suspect’s vehicle, a sheriff’s office official on scene said no children were in the car during the wreck.
