GREAT FALLS, S.C. (AP) – A Chester County man has been arrested and accused of stomping a dog to death.

Great Falls police told local media outlets that 27-year-old Cory Allen Smith is accused of illegal treatment of animals.

Smith was arrested Sunday after his former girlfriend told officers that he had killed the dog last month. It was not clear if Smith has an attorney.

Officers say Smith’s former girlfriend told them about the Feb. 21 death when they went to her house Feb. 22 to check on Smith’s children. Smith had asked them to check on the children.

She told officer she had argued with Smith the day the dog was killed.
