COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – The state Revenue Department is mailing some income tax refund checks this year rather than using direct deposit in an attempt to cut down on fraud.
The Greenville News reported that agency officials said Monday they are sending paper refund checks in some cases because of an increase in fraud nationally.
The Revenue Department said fraudulent tax returns in South Carolina have more than doubled from the same time last year. But the agency would not say how many fraudulent tax returns have been filed.
Director Rick Reames said the agency’s systems have not been compromised.
Personal information from millions of tax returns were hacked in 2012. The revenue department says there has not been a single case of confirmed identity fraud from that incident.
