COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – A vote by South Carolina’s economic advisers has provided legislators an additional $300 million in discretionary spending.

The Board of Economic Advisors voted unanimously Friday to recognize a total of $415 million in higher-than-previously-expected revenues. But $37.5 million of that must go toward property tax relief, and $75.5 million is limited by law to certain expenses, primarily college scholarships and K-12 education.

The additional revenue includes what’s coming into state coffers above expectations through April 30 and how that impacts projections for the fiscal year starting July 1.

Legislators had expected a windfall. That’s further complicated their debate over how to fund roadwork.

GOP Sen. Tom Davis is filibustering part of the Senate’s budget package because he opposes raising gas taxes. He says the additional money can fund roadwork.
