ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) – The new owners of a South Carolina ice cream shop say they’re bearing the brunt of angry but misdirected messages because of a Confederate battle flag in front of their business.
The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports the flagpole is on a tiny parcel deeded by the property’s previous owner to a chapter of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans. Buzz Braxton of the group’s Rivers Bridge Camp chapter declined comment.
Tommy and Debbie Daras say they paid little attention to the Confederate flag before opening Edisto River Creamery two months ago. The Maryland natives say they and their employees have received threats.
The Confederate battle flag has become a flashpoint since nine people were killed in a racially motivated attack at a black church in Charleston.
