FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) hopes to recruit new members of the law enforcement team. SCHP recruiters will host an informational meeting for people in Florence interested in becoming a State Trooper Thursday afternoon.
SCHP Recruiter Corporal Michael Zang says the recruit team hopes to meet with people interested law enforcement in their community, opposed to them traveling to the Columbia headquarters.
Recruiters are looking for the next generation of State Troopers for the January or July class.
Cpl. Zang explained, “We’re always looking to replenish the group that retires or moving on to other careers. Just like we have classes every January and July that means every so often there is that many people retiring or moving on.”
Starting salaries have been recently revised, now entry state troopers start out at $38,273. Other benefits include early retirement, insurance and take home car.
Cpl. Zang said, “It is a calling, it’s not something that is easy to do or everybody thinks about. But there are a percentage of us that love doing that are looking for the next generation.”
“The more troopers we have the less time that some in a crash or a situation where they need a trooper to respond to obviously that will assist them greatly is having more presence out here,” Cpl. Zang adds.
Recruiters will be at the SC Troop 5 Headquarters on West Palmetto Street today starting at 1 to 3 Thursday afternoon.
