SPARTANBURG, SC  – Dive crews recovered the body of a Brynes High School student who drowned Monday while swimming with friends at Lake Lyman.

Tyger River Fire Department, EMS and the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office were called to Carshalton Drive.

Markell Tyquann Nesbitt , 16, of Lyman was swimming with a group of friends when he went under and did not resurface.

Sheriff Chuck Wright says the teens were at a private home, hanging out on a dock, and then went for a swim.

No alcohol was involved, according to Wright.

The Byrnes Athletic Department confirmed that Nesbitt is a member of the Byrnes football team.

A friend of Nesbitt’s said he was a rising junior and wide receiver. The friend said Nesbitt was a hard worker and he will miss his smile the most.

Sheriff Wright prayed with the teen’s family on the scene.

“We just asked that God will help them and be with them, because they’re going to need it long after this is over,” Wright said.

Spartanburg District 5 Superintendent Scott Turner says they have counselors at the Byrnes Field House who can talk with the students about the situation.
