New numbers just released show 13 people have died from the flu this season in South Carolina.

The SC Department of Health and Environmental Control released the latest flu report Thursday morning.

DHEC says since October 4, there have been 13 confirmed flu deaths in the state and 676 flu related hospitalizations. That includes one death and 167 flu hospitalizations since the last flu report a week ago.

In the Upstate, Greenville County has had the most flu cases, following by Spartanburg and Pickens Counties.

This time last year, 141 lab confirmed deaths had been reported. Last year’s flu season was much more active because a strain of the flu mutated, making the flu vaccine much less effective.
