COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says he has fired a deputy for defacing a poster in a crime victim’s garage.
Multiple media outlets reported that Lott said Tuesday he fired 25-year-old Kaleb Broome and arrested him on a charge of misconduct in office.
The sheriff said Broome responded to a domestic dispute Feb. 23. Lott said as deputies helped the victim, Broome circled Nigeria on a poster map of Africa and turned it into a racial slur.
Lott says Broome took a piece of double-sided tape.
The sheriff said Broome committed a crime by taking the tape that was worth less than a dime, and broke department rules by writing the slur.
Lott said another deputy reported the incident.
It was not clear if Broome has a lawyer.
