Two parents were denied bond after they were accused in a child abuse case in Spartanburg County after authorities say an X-ray showed several broken ribs.
The 4-month-old was taken to the hospital for breathing problems and checked for pneumonia. That’s when doctors found at least three broken ribs and authorities were called.
They say the child was previously X-rayed in December and didn’t have broken ribs at the time.
Investigators told WSPA-TV that the parents, later identified as Kelsey Lynn Gates, 18 and Robert William Thompson, 19, originally lied about what happened.
After a background check, deputies say they found out Thompson was arrested for felony child abuse in Florida in 2013.
Gates later admitted to investigators that Thompson grabbed the baby during a fight and held it “really hard around the chest,” according to authorities.
Thompson then confessed to squeezing the child, police said. The couple will stay in jail until a circuit court judge reviews their case and possibly sets bond, according to GoUpstate.
Thompson and Gates both face abuse with great bodily injury charges.
