MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Savannah’s Playground will have its grand opening ceremony on Labor Day weekend.
After months of delays, Myrtle Beach Mayor John Rhodes says the playground will be ready by September 5. However, they hope to have a soft opening within the next two weeks.
“We’re going to be able to take care of our kids and let them know what it’s like to be a part of society and enjoy some finer things in life. And that’s the objective there, is to give these kids an opportunity,” said Mayor Rhodes.
Savannah’s Playground aims to be an inclusive park where children with mental and physical disabilities can play.
“But it’s also an enabling park which allows all kids to be able to play on it. It’s not just for special needs kids,” added Mayor Rhodes.
Susan Thatcher-Longo walks by the park often and says she has watched it being built over the past couple of months.
“We were excited to see it coming about and hoping it would be done this summer so that our grandchildren could enjoy it. Unfortunately, they didn’t get that opportunity last month,” said Thatcher-Longo.
Mayor Rhodes said this will be the largest enabling park in the southeast. He hopes it will bring people from all over the southeast and even the country to Myrtle Beach.
Once the park is open there will still be two major phases to add. They will include a splash pond where kids can play in recycled water, a place where kids can fish off the pier and paddle boats that can fit a wheelchair.
