HORRY COUNTY, SC (WBTW) – Santee Cooper is warning its customers about a scam where a caller is demanding immediate payment of bills.

The press release says that people are calling businesses claiming to be Santee Cooper employees and demanding payment via credit card or wire transfers.  The callers have been known to leave a callback number that is answered by someone who claims to be with Santee Cooper.

Officials say that the scammers have also been showing up to businesses and homes in person, wearing clothing with a label that says “Santee Cooper”.

The company reminds customers that Santee Cooper will never visit a home or business demanding any form of payment, or force a customer to pay with a particular form of payment.

Customers are encouraged to call 1-800-804-7424 to verify that anyone representing themselves as an employee, actually is a Santee Cooper employee.
