MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) – Grand Strand law enforcement officials say they are ready with their safety plan for the Memorial Day Atlantic Beach Bikefest.
Agencies in the Myrtle Beach area have been working for months on developing the plan. Area media outlets report that Wednesday was the last joint meeting of officials to discuss details before next month’s event.
Last year, the weekend turned deadly when three people were killed and seven were wounded in eight shootings on Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach. The weekend attracts tens of thousands for the Bikefest and the unofficial start of the summer season
This year officials are taking a number of steps to make the weekend safe. The key element is a 23-mile, one-way traffic loop to keep traffic moving at night during Bikefest.
