May is military appreciation month in Myrtle Beach, and the Rolling Thunder spent Saturday paying tribute to area veterans.

The Grand Strand chapter held an event at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church which honored veterans of the wars Iraq and Afghanistan and emphasized the importance of paying a special tribute to these brave men and women.

Three local veterans were singled out for their sacrifice as the “Quilts of Valor” presented new blankets, to honor the veteran’s service.

No blanket was the same, and each veteran said a big “thank you.”

“I’m going to figure out a way to display it in my room. I’m not going to sleep under it, but display it to show everyone, find a way to frame the certificate and put it by it; and everyone who comes over is going to have to see my quilt,” said U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Melissa Dion, one of the recipients.

All of the recipient’s commented on the surprise and honor of receiving their blankets.

“Quilts of Valor” started in 2003 and, since then, it’s donated more than 100,000 quilts to service members.
