Duke Energy’s Robinson Nuclear plant employees raised more than $16,000, enough to purchase 150 bicycles and helmets, for children in Darlington, Chesterfield and Lee counties.
Several children received the bicycles at the presentation at Darlington High School’s gym Thursday.
This is the first time the plant organized a drive of this type. Organizers say they were blown away when employees donated thousands of dollars to purchase bikes for some Pee Dee children.

“You know the real purpose of this whole thing was to make sure that children got that experience of receiving a bike you know it’s a way to promote healthy living but it’s also a great moment for a child when they get that first bike and that’s what we really want to facilitate,” said Charles Ellison with Duke Energy.
