LUMBERTON, NC (WBTW) – Two months after Hurricane Matthew, Robeson County Schools are on the road to recovery.
The Robeson County School Board entered the first phase of reconstruction after Hurricane Matthew, which includes finding a contractor to repair damaged schools, the district office and warehouses.
Earlier this week Robeson County School Administrators received three proposals for a building design and construction team to repair damages to the eight schools in the county.
The hardest hit schools like West Lumberton, W.H. Knuckles and Lumberton Junior High will be the primary focus. School officials say other schools have damage to the roof.
School officials say the main goal is to make sure students return to a safe and healthy learning environment.
Hugh McIlwain, Robeson County School Interim Auditor said, “It’s very important to get all of the schools back up and running like they were. Just for peace of mind with the students, to have some sense of normalcy to get back where we were.”
Each firm must have experience with significant building and electrical repairs, Robeson County School Board will discuss the proposals and vote on the most qualified contract next week. After the board votes on a proposal, the firm will negotiate a contract.
“[The firm will] Come into our schools to do damage assessments [to] see what needs to be done to get them back up and running. Like how they were before the storm,” adds McIlwain.
The Robeson County School Board will review the three building design and construction proposals during the school board meeting next Monday during a special meeting. Count on News13 to continue to follow this story.
