LUMBERTON, NC (WBTW) – The North Carolina Department of Transportation is keeping an eye on conditions in the Border Belt counties, which includes both Robeson and Scotland.
In fact, North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory has already declared a State of Emergency.
However, the North Carolina DOT says it’s ready.
“You really never know. You just adapt and you just deal with whatever Mother Nature throws at you. All of our equipment as you can see is loaded and ready for the upcoming event. Whatever that might be,” said Maintenance Engineer Eugene McKethan.
On Wednesday, DOT crews mixed and put out 30,000 gallons of salt brine. Thursday they continued preparations efforts by checking a lot of the trucks.
“We got three 5,000 gallon tanks. We have 15,000 gallons of capacity. We have brined all the bare pavement routes,” McKethan stated.
Not too far away at Bo’s Food Store in Lumberton many flocked the store to pick up items.
“Yea just got to keep the lines going because customers are ready to get in and get out,” explained Philip Lavoie, Co-Manager at Bo’s Food Store.
A usually busy store already, the next couple of days could shape out to be one of its busiest stretches.
“Tomorrow morning, it’ll really get busy tomorrow morning,” Lavoie said.
DOT workers will come in on Thursday night to keep an eye on the roads.
They say worst case scenario, if the precipitation starts to freeze, that the less traffic on the roads the quicker they can work.
