CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – Horry County Emergency Management said in a release it will continue to monitor the river levels along the Little Pee Dee River, Waccamaw River and the Intracoastal Waterway due to the recent rain.
Low lying areas around some of the local boat landings have prompted temporary road closures due to flooding.
“A lot of times the roads that are listed that are closed are in river communities. So we know that we’re typically going to see more water on those roads and so those are the first to be closed,” Brooke Holden with Horry County Emergency Management said.
The road closures come just three months after October’s Historic floods. President Obama declared it a Federal Emergency and sent federal aid to the area but county leaders say that won’t be the case this time.
“In a situation like this chances are it will not be declared for six inches of water rising into a river front home will not be declared a national disaster. So if a person does not have flood insurance, chances are they won’t be covered,” Holden said.
The roads closed are as follow:
• Lucas Bay Road (closed near the Pee Dee Hwy. end)
• Hughes Landing
• Punch Bowl Rd
• Landing Rd (includes River Front North & South)
• Pitts Landing (off Hwy 378)
• Big Bull Landing Rd in Bucksport
People who live on Landing Road say they dealt with major damages and flooding in October. Some residents were displaced for a month. It’s something they’re used to.
“Well I mean, it’s part of living on the river and you know if you live on a river in a low area occasionally you’re going to be flooded and it’s a little aggravating but you just deal with it,” Ricky Martin said.
County leaders say the roads will remain closed until they can safely be driven on.
