MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – A group of investors from China plan to visit the Grand Strand this month, Myrtle Beach Mayor John Rhodes confirmed to News13.

He says the group will begin arriving on Saturday and have plans to stay until September 4.

Rhodes says while on the Grand Strand, the group will tour the area and look at potential sites for a previously announced Chinese Cultural Village. In addition, Rhodes says they plan to meet with leaders at Coastal Carolina University to discuss potential educational opportunities.

The mayor also confirmed to News13 plans to travel to China shortly after the group leaves. Rhodes says he will leave on September 6 to attend the 10th Annual China-U.S. Tourism Leadership Summit in Yinchuan.

“We have scheduled a number of presentations, discussions and networking opportunities with leading Chinese travel executives in order to help you foster strong relationships and take advantage of this rapidly emerging market,” the event’s website states. “Attendees will get substantial updates from marketing, trade and government officials on best practices, the media landscape, marketing beyond the gateways and much more.”

While in China, Rhodes says he also has plans to discuss a student exchange program.

In March, News13 reported on a $80 to $100 million commitment to bring a Chinese Cultural Village to Myrtle Beach.

“It’ll be like an Epcot center,” Rhodes said. “There will be a lot of food and dining and shows and events taking place.”

Rhodes said at the time of the announcement the goal is to educate people in the area about the Chinese culture. Rhodes and Horry County Council Chairman Mark Lazarus announced the plans following a previous trip to China.
