MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) – Officers were called to the Wave Rider Resort in the 1600-block of South Ocean Boulevard for a shooting during the 2014 Bikefest. This year the manager says he will have retired police officers that will patrol around the clock.
Officers found a male and female victim with gunshot wounds upon arrival to the scene. One of the victims underwent surgery at a local hospital, police say.
The security guards will also monitor the resort during the overnight shift when managers are most concerned about anything happening.
Mike Grehl is a retired police officer from Upstate New York and this weekend he will patrol The Wave Rider Resort in Myrtle Beach. Although, two people were shot there at last year’s Bikefest, he’s not concerned about a repeat this year.
“No I don’t I feel comfortable in saying that I think that the coverage that the city has put together, the whole program with the amount of people they’ve got involved in all different departments,” Grehl said.
In fact Grehl believes the shooting was an isolated incident.
“That was two people who had nothing, I’m not even sure there in a bike group themselves and it was an accidental shooting with the gun in the room and somebody was shot in the leg,” Grehl added.
During his shifts this weekend, he will keep an eye out for anything that looks out of order.
“Just the parking lot, overnight I’ll be on the night shift overnight 10-7 or something. And you know just keep people from that shouldn’t be in here off the lot and keep it organized.”
At the end of the weekend, Grehl hopes everyone will leave enjoying a nice vacation on the beach.
“The thing I’ve seen with people is you know most of them they came here a lot of them families and have a good time and enjoy themselves. They come here with here with expensive bikes and they have a lot of money, pride in their bikes and they want to keep them nice,” Grehl said.
