FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – It’s mostly quiet on South Cashua Drive, except for in the mornings and afternoons as kids make their way to and from Delmae Elementary School.
Now that what will become the new Delmae Elementary is starting to take shape, families and business owners are hoping to see traffic ease up there.
Cars and buses already navigate this busy part of town at peak hours–carrying students to class and making sure they get home safely.
Joan Taylor’s grandson is a fourth grader at Delmae.
“If I don’t absolutely have to be down this way, I avoid it,” Taylor said.
Maurice Bailey trains at Ultimate Taekwondo right across the street from Delmae. He says things can sometimes get pretty busy down there.
“There’s a pretty good flow until about 2:30 in the afternoon,” Bailey explained. “We have a bottleneck right here on Cashua and the street adjacent to it.”
Florence District One officials announced the new Delmae Elementary last November. The building is showing signs of progress.
The planned 125,000 sq. ft. school will sit on 20 acres directly behind the current building. The district hopes to open the new school in time for the 2017-18 school year.
The old Delmae Elementary will be torn down and used as parking for the new building. Maurice Bailey hopes this means traffic will improve in this busy neighborhood.
“People will be able to get in and out a little quicker,” Bailey hoped.
Joan Taylor says her grandson is looking forward to a brand new school.
“I know they will be excited,” Taylor said.
