HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) – Horry County Fire Rescue assisted DNR Sunday afternoon in the search for a missing swimmer in the Waccamaw River.

Horry County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Brian Van Aernem says divers from both agencies are working together behind Pottery Landing off of 701 doing the search.

A dive team found the body of William Tompkins Sr, 48, Sunday evening in the area of 430 Channel View Road, a block away from Pottery Landing.

Officials say the man went missing around noon while out boating on the Waccamaw River.

Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler says Tompkins was pronounced dead on the scene at 5:50pm.

SC DNR is investigating the incident.
