The outside southbound lane of US Highway 17 Bypass, from East Coast Honda to the Glenns Bay/Holmestown Road intersection, will be closed starting Thursday at 8 p.m. to allow for asphalt work.
Depending on weather, the lane may be closed 1-2 hours, officials say.
A sinkhole formed in the same construction area during heavy rains earlier this week.
Most of the day Tuesday, drivers on the south side of the Strand had traffic to look forward to from the intersection of Highway 544 and Highway 17 to Glenns Bay Road.
The traffic back-up stretched for miles.
“This was an unforeseen issue that occurred and we were mandated to make that closure for the repair work for the safety of all motorists,” said Horry County Spokesperson Lisa Bourcier.
Utility crews caused a sink hole in the right lane of Highway 17 just past Glenns Bay Road.
A small hole, but it forced crews to close the lane for fear the road could collapse under the weight of passing vehicles. In addition Thursday night, the median and inside eastbound lane of Holmestown Road will be closed starting at 7 p.m. to allow for utility work. Depending on weather, the lane may be closed 3-4 hours.
