DILLON COUNTY, SC (WBTW) – The American Red Cross and its community partners visited homes in the Little Rock area to show people how to be prepared for a home fire Saturday morning.

The smoke alarm blitz brought in teams of Red Cross volunteers, local firefighters and volunteers from DHEC to install smoke alarms and educate residents on the importance of having a fire escape plan.

“It feels really good knowing that the county is worried about the safety of homes,” said Hunt.

Fire safety is what Red Cross volunteers say the Little Rock area needs.

“We normally get the information from the fire departments on where the needs are and here we have a large Native American population and we wanted to be sure that we took care of them as well,” said Red Cross volunteer Judy Delsignore.

Hunt was one of nearly four hundred residents in the area whose home needed new smoke detectors. In fact, volunteers placed three new smoke detectors in Hunt’s home Saturday morning.

“Today it’s 381 homes here in South Carolina that we’re doing and on average we install three detectors per home so we’ll be close to 1,000 that we install in South Carolina today” mentioned Delsignore.

The American Red Cross says seven people die in a house fire in the country on a typical day. The smoke alarm blitz is an ongoing effort in South Carolina and North Carolina and if you would like to get involved you can contact your local fire department.
