Mary Fedorko’s story is like many others who become addicted to pain killers.
“It started with a back pain that I had, and it was overprescribed, and it just took off from there.”
It started with a prescription, and she eventually got hooked. She is one of more than 20 million Americans with some kind of substance abuse issue. That’s everything from alcohol, to drugs, to prescription medication.
She says the first key to overcoming it, is looking for help.
“I can from a family where you didn’t air your dirty laundry or you didn’t talk about things like that, but that’s so not true. When you keep it inside it can’t do anything but just compound everything,” Fedorko said. “There’s so many people there who are willing to help and that truly care about your well-being and your family’s.”
Tidelands Health, Shoreline Behavioral Health Services, Circle Park Behavioral Health Services teamed up to provide an addiction information phoneline Thursday for people who have questions or need resources to help battle substance abuse in the eastern Carolinas.
