RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Raleigh police said an officer was injured and the suspect was killed Wednesday night in a shootout with police. The incident stemmed from an armed robbery police were responding to.

Officers were dispatched to an armed robbery just before 7:20 p.m. Wednesday. Officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect upon arriving at the scene near the intersection of New Bern Avenue and Clarendon Crescent, police said.

The armed robbery happened at a nearby BP gas station, according to a 911 caller.

“I just walked out of the gas station,” the caller said, noting that it was being robbed. “He’s got a gun. … I was in there. I ran out of the gas station. He had the clerk at gunpoint.”

A Raleigh police officer and the suspect were both hit by gunfire and taken to WakeMed. The 911 caller reported hearing 10 to 15 gunshots.

The suspect later died, police confirmed around 10:15 p.m. The officer is expected to recover.
