NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) A threat of rain didn’t stop the crowds of people from revving their engines and enjoying Memorial Day Weekend on the north end of the Grand Strand.
“Our main issue is just keeping the roads clear,” Lt. Sean Downey of North Myrtle Beach Police said.
For officers at the command post in North Myrtle Beach it’s been business as usual with just a few more visitors in town.
“We put an olive branch out there and let them know that we’re here,” Lt. Downey said. “Make sure they have our contact numbers.”
This week also marks the roll out in full of new body cameras. The department has been pushing them out in segments over the last few weeks but now it has gone throughout the force.
“It’s just another way to protect the officer,” Lt. Downey said. “The body camera goes with you wherever you go. If you go inside the 16-story condo, if you go inside a residence, you are still capturing what is going on.”
A few blocks North in Atlantic Beach, the police department made a few changes to their approach this year by moving their command post and using the barricades to help the flow of traffic.
Chief Tim Taylor said he’s pleased with the changes and how they’ve helped improve the weekend logistically from his side.
