MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Rain has delayed Sunday evening’s lane closures at the intersection of US-17 Bypass and Glenns Bay Road for up to one week.

SCDOT and Southern Asphalt has agreed to re-scheduled the lane closures for 6 p.m., Sunday, August 7th.

Bill Raper with Southern Asphalt, the paving crew working on the lane closures explains that if there is any moisture on the ground they are unable to continue with construction,

Contractors will start the switch at 6 p.m. that evening with the goal of having the shift completed by 6 a.m. on Monday, August 8.

During this work, The Lakes subdivision’s current entrance on US-17 Bypass will close temporarily until the traffic shift is complete.

Two new access roads at The Lakes subdivision will open at the end of this week. One at Holmestown Road, and another further south on US-17.

People who live in the area said they’re looking forward to the change because they’ve often been stuck in traffic trying to exit the neighborhood.

The new access roads could potentially be a shortcut for their daily commute and they said it should cut the risk for all drivers in the area.

“Here you have to wait on the old one to cross and it’s terribly dangerous. This way you can go south and just take a right turn or take the back roads and if you go north you have the light at Holmestown Road, so I think it’s a lot safer,” said Anna-Marie Fahad who lives in the Lakes community.

Lake Access 2, which will access Holmestown Road, is scheduled to open Thursday, July 28, around noon.

After this road is open, the current access into The Lakes subdivision at Waccamaw River Road will close the afternoon on Thursday, July 28, so that the pavement can be tied into the new location for Lake Access 1, which is located further south on US-17 Bypass.

Lake Access 1 is planned to reopen later in the afternoon of Friday, July 29.
