The 2015 Wilmington Azalea Festival is this week, with various events, including garden tours, garden parties and a special appearance by a well-known rap star.
Festivities include the queen’s coronation, concerts, parade, street fair, garden and home tours, celebrity appearances.
The festival, which is in its 67th year, has already crowned this year’s Queen Azalea, but there is still much planned for Friday and the weekend.
The rapper Nelly is scheduled to appear on Friday evening around 7 pm at Cape Fear Community College.
The Azalea Festival Parade is planned in downtown Wilmington from 9:30 to 11:30 am on Saturday
The events of the festival started out as a fundraiser for the Cape Fear Garden Club.
The yearly Azalea Garden Club tour is planned to start Friday at 10 am and continues all weekend. Click here for an event schedule.
This year’s Queen Azalea Crowing was unique because the very first Queen — from 1948 — was on hand to actually crown the 2015 winner.
