FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – A federal judge in Florence sentenced a Horry County man to more than 22 years in prison for a firearms charge.

Jamal Lewis was convicted as a felon in possession of a firearm for a March 2015 shooting at an apartment complex on Cedar Street.

Lewis’s case was jointly prosecuted under “Project Cease Fire”, a local, state and federal effort aimed to get illegal guns off the streets by handing down harder sentences.

“It’s just another tool for us to use to reduce the amount of gun violence we have on our streets to reduce the gang activity that we have and also to deter the activity from occurring if an offender knows they’re going to be held to a stiffer penalty for their actions then hopefully we can reduce that crime from occurring again,”  Lt Joey Crosby with Myrtle Beach police said.

Myrtle Beach police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are working to prosecute those firearms violations in federal court.
