MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) – The Myrtle Beach Police Department begins a series of meetings with local businesses this week to discuss security plans for the Atlantic Beach Bikefest on Memorial Day weekend.

The Sun News reports that the meetings will update business owners on what they can expect during the long weekend that was marred last year by violence. Three people died and seven were injured in the Myrtle Beach area.

Officials have been working on a safety plan for the weekend this year. That includes a 23-mile, one-way traffic loop to help control traffic at night.

Tens of thousands come to the beach that weekend not only for Bikefest, but for the traditional start to the summer season.
