TARBORO, N.C. (WNCN) – A suspected burglar was shot and killed by police during a break-in Tuesday night in Tarboro, according to police.

Officers responded to a call in regards to an occupied residential burglary in progress around 8:25 p.m. in the 3500 block of Main Street.

Upon arrival, police confronted a man near the back door of the home and then became involved in “a brief encounter” with the man. During the encounter, an officer fired his gun and struck the suspect.

“Despite extensive first aid efforts, the subject later succumb[ed] to his injuries,” police said.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation will conduct an external investigation of the shooting. The Tarboro Police Department will also conduct an administrative review of the incident.

The name of the officer involved is being withheld at this time. The suspect’s name is being withheld pending family notification, police said.

“Members of the Tarboro Police Department would like to extend our deepest sympathies to all those impacted by this tragedy. We pray for comfort and healing for the families involved and ask for patience and understanding throughout the investigative process. Additional updates will be provided when possible,” police said.
