DARLINGTON, SC (WBTW) – More than a year after the Darlington Police Department was broken into, officials confirm multiple guns were included in the stolen equipment.
Darlington Police Chief Kelvin Washington stated in a press release Wednesday morning that firearms were included in the items stolen from the police department in July 2017.
On the weekend of July 1, 2017, multiple pieces of equipment were taken from the police department. Darlington City Council held an emergency meeting the following Monday to discuss ways to increase security and upgrade both the department and city hall.
SLED initiated an investigation into who could have stolen the police equipment, including the guns, but more than a year later, no arrests have been made.
Then police chief Danny Watson promised security upgrades to the police department, despite the difficulty of making the upgrades in an old building.
“It’s going to be a difficult process. The building itself is made out of block,” explained then police chief Watson. “Everything you do here, you have to drill through reinforced concrete. It’s going to be difficult to put cameras up or a pass-code system in.”
Chief Washington, who was named to the position in February, says anyone with information related to the stolen guns or other police equipment should contact the Darlington Police Department or SLED.
Specific information related to the stolen guns – style or how many – was not released.
