KINSTON, N.C. (May 8, 2018) – The Myrtle Beach Pelicans’ late comeback attempt was foiled Tuesday night by the Down East Wood Ducks in a 5-3 loss from Grainger Stadium.
Trailing 5-0 in the bottom of the eighth, Tyler Alamo blasted a solo home run, his fifth of the season to lead the Pelicans (13-19). With runners on the edges and two down, Aramis Ademan and Connor Myers laced back-to-back RBI singles to cut the deficit to 5-3. The Birds retired in order in the ninth and could not complete the return.
Edgar Arredondo (3-1) was strong in the win for the Wood Ducks (16-16), throwing 5.2 shutout innings, allowing six hits while striking out four and walking two.
The Woodies struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning off of starter Tyson Miller(3-3), who was handed the loss after allowing all five runs in five innings of work. Leody Taveras blasted his second home run of the season, a solo shot, to lead off the inning. A base hit coupled with an error then brought home Alex Kowalczyk before Josh Altmann rripped an RBI double to make it 3-0.
Anderson Tejeda cracked a two-run shot for his fifth home run of the season in the fifth inning to give the Wood Ducks a 5-0 advantage.
Casey Bloomquist and Jhon Romero combined to fire three scoreless innings to finish off the game out of the bullpen for the Birds.
