MYRTLE BEACH – The Myrtle Beach Pelicans scored six in the third inning to beat Salem 8-1 in Game 1 of the Southern Division Championship Series Wednesday.
Myrtle Beach leads the three-game series 1-0 and can clinch with a win Thursday night. Games 2 and 3 will be played at Salem. Myrtle Beach won the Mills Cup title last year.
The Pelicans led 1-0 entering the third when they sent 12 batters to the plate and extend their lead to 7-0.
On the mound, Carolina League Pitcher of the Year Trevor Clifton struck out six in six innings.
