Several calls were made to the Fire Rescue over the weekend, after heavy rain shut down roads in Florence.

The rescue team was called out Sunday morning to assist stranded drivers who were stuck on the roads.

“This was more rain than we experienced since Hurricane Matthew. That was a historic event as well,” said City manager, Drew Griffin.

Officials said they were surprised to see new areas such as South Cashua Drive, and other neighborhoods in that area have flooding issues.

“I believe there was four contacts made. That morning we got called out to several vehicles,” said Captain Michael Bunch.

Residents around the affected areas want answers, but the city said this is out of their control.

“Its just the magnitude of the storm. Imagine 18-inches falling in four hours, ove the entire surface of the earth, of that area. Well that is way about the capacity of storm drain system,” said Griffin.

Crews said the best thing to do is to avoid flood water. If you get caught and the water isn’t rising, you should wait until help arrives.

“I would suggest to people to take precaution,” said Capt. Bunch.

The city said the drainage system would cost millions of dollars to replace and it won’t be easy.
