The American Red Cross and local volunteers distributed supplies at several locations in Lumberton Sunday afternoon.
“To see everybody come out and say I need help, and I’m able to help,” said Fairmont Middle School teacher, Miranda Williams.
Williams started an organization called ‘Giving Love to Lumberton’. This is the second time she has helped out the community by partnering up with businesses who have donated cleaning supplies, water, and formula for babies.
On Sunday afternoon, volunteers were stationed at Lumberton Junior High School. They handed out supplies and food for residents recovering from Hurricane Florence.
“I saw one of my students out here and that was emotional. To think about them living in a shelter for 3 weeks, but I know what we’re doing is making a difference and that’s all that matters at this point” said Williams.
A few miles down, the Red Cross was stationed at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church.
“We’re here to hand out shovels, and cleaning supplies. The buckets have sponges, brooms, and more so folks can get back into their home and start that next step,” said regional communication officer, Cari Dighton.
About 150 buckets were placed outside the church, and ready to be given out as people head back home and face the job of cleaning up after the storm.
“We’re just trying to give back the only way we know how,” said Williams.
The American Red Cross will be stationed at Lumberton Jr. High School and Hyde Park Baptist church on Monday from 11-1p.m and 4-6p.m.
