A local veteran hosted a ruck marathon to bring awareness across the Pee Dee.
“It just proves to me that brotherhood from the military is still alive today, still alive,” said attendee, Wayne Kenney.
Veterans acorss the Carolinas came together for a special cause. “Veteran suicide is a real thing. I’m a veteran myself. Suicide is an epidemic, and the biggest thing you can do is reach out to someone,” said veteran, John Cody,.
22 for 22 ruck marathon took place Saturday morning outside the Florence Veterans Park, in hopes to bring awareness on depression, suicide, and PTSD for those who served in our country.
“The more people that know about the problem veterans face then obviously the better that we can do for our veterans,” said attendee, Jeremy Braithwaite.
Shawn Laurie, started an organization called ‘Vet Life4Life’ after his friend took his own life back in 2016. Now he hopes this ruck will shine some light around the community.
“I’m truly appreciated by so many people showing their support and their love for the veterans community. I’m very grateful,” said organizer, Shawn Laurie.
Over 40 veterans hiked nearly 13 miles bright and early, and several said it was all worth it.
“I’d love to see no matter what group it is, that we all come together,” said attendee, Faye Porter.
