FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – Florence police say the Martin Luther King, Jr. Bridge in Florence is closed Friday morning following a train derailment.

Lt. Mike Brandt with the Florence Police Department says the train derailment occurred Friday morning near the McLeod Regional Medical Center, closing traffic near the intersection of Oakland Avenue and Lucas Street and Cheves and Lucas streets. Drivers are asked to avoid the area until further notice.

It’s unknown if there are any injuries.

The area will remain closed until inspections of the bridge have been completed and officials are sure the bridge is secure for travel.
