DARLINGTON, SC (WBTW)- Dozens of community leaders and family members gathered to celebrate a Timmonsville woman who turned 110-years-old.
Isadora Perkins-Byrd celebrated her birthday at the Oak Haven nursing home in Darlington County Saturday afternoon.
Perkins-Byrd’s niece, Juanita Jackson, said her aunt has lived in Timmonsville her entire life.
“She was the elder of our family,” Jackson said. “She was my mother’s sister, and they were the only two girls out of other the other boys,” she continued. “She always had a open home, open heart, and she was always available; a real great home-maker.”
Perkins-Byrd’s daughter, Catherine Freeman, said she’s happy to have her mother around for a long time.
“It’s very, very nice just to know she’s around,” Freeman said.
Freeman said she has fond memories of her mother singing around the house, and that her mother still loves to sing.
Jackson said she used to live on the same street with her cousins, and her aunt Isadora.
“The whole family had homes on the same street so we all grew up together, and remembering her,” she said. “Church-going was a big part of her life. She loved singing, and still yet today she’s a great singer.”
The Mayor of Timmonsville, Darrick Jackson, and the Mayor of Darlington, Gloria Hines, were both in attendance.
“The Mayor of Timmonsville is her nephew,” said Jackson. “The Mayor of Darlington actually goes to our church.”
Perkins-Byrd has more than 60 grandchildren, and great grandchildren combined. Her great-great-great granddaughter was born in June 2018.
