SLED investigates officer-involved shooting at Hartsville hospital

HARTSVILLE (WBTW) –  The Darlington County Sheriff’s Office says an inmate from the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center was captured after escaping officers Saturday evening.

In a press release on Sunday morning, Lt. Robert Kilgo with the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office clarified that the inmate had been released from Carolina Pines Hospital in Hartsville when he escaped from deputies in the parking lot around 10:30 p.m. The inmate tried to carjack someone in the parking lot, and at that time an officer fired his weapon, Kilgo said. No one was hurt.

The inmate ran into a wooded area, Kilgo said. Darlington County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Hartsville police officers tracked the inmate, and got him back into custody around 11:40 p.m., Kilgo said.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating what happened at the request of the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office, Kilgo said. Once detention center officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, Kilgo added. That is standard procedure for a shooting involving an officer.

SLED reports there is no body cam or dash cam video of the incident. All information gathered by SLED during the investigation will be presented to the Fourth Circuit Solicitor’s Office. This is an ongoing investigation and no other information will be released at this time, SLED reports.
