Emcompass Health Rehabilitation hospital partnered up with KJ’s Care IGA to help patients. They held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday to unveil a new simulating shopping center.
This will help patients who suffered strokes, brain injury, or have traumatic conditions.
Patients will get a real life experience by pushing carts, picking up groceries, and choosing healthy foods.
“It provides them comfort when they go home, that way they know they can actually go to a grocery store and provide for themselves,” said CEO of Encompass Health, Brian Nunn.
A nutritionist will go over calorie counts and teach patients how to prepare healthy meals. Cognitive patients, will receive a grocery list and a therapist will then go over how much everything costs.
“Now that I’ve done this right here, it helps me to navigate this whole process,” said Deloris Brown, a patient at Encompass Health.
The nearly $14,000 grocery store took about 5 weeks to build and patients are happy to finally see it come together.
“I think this was a very good thing. It’s very important, not only what’s in the store but how we get it,” said Brown.
Starting this Thursday, patient will be able to fill up their carts during therapy.
