DILLON, S.C. (WBTW) – The South Carolina Department of Transportation in Dillon County prepared for Wednesday’s snow early on Tuesday morning.

SCDOT Resident Maintenance Engineer in Dillon, Mitchell Carter, said the department began treating the roads with salt and brine at 7:30 Tuesday morning.

“If you get a lot of ice you can use the salt brine to melt it and if you don’t get ice and it just snows, of course, you can plow it off the roads,” Carter said.

Carter said the department is treating the roads the same way it did when it snowed earlier this year.

“We’ve pretreated all the interstates in our county and primary roads, bridges, and overpasses with salt brine,” he said.

Manessa Hardin lives in Dillon County and said she hit a few rough patches of ice when it snowed earlier this year.

“This neighborhood we got it really good,” she said. “We got six inches of snow but it kind of got icy as it got later at night.”

Hardin said her car nearly slid into bushes outside of her house because of the ice on the roads. However, she said for the most part, SCDOT cleared the snow and ice off of the main roads.

“I can tell you whenever it starts, we’ll be on the interstate that will be our first stop” Carter said about treating the Dillon roads. “We do the interstates then we go to primary roads then we get to the secondaries.”

Hardin said parts of the interstate were icy when the snow fell earlier this year.

“My husband said it was pretty icy getting out of here to go to Florence on the interstate so he said that was a little tricky and a little slippery,” she said.

She said she hopes the roads will be clear on Wednesday for people to drive to work.

“I think they’ve kind of got a system going to where they’re going to go ahead and start doing some pre-work and go ahead and make sure that the roads stay clear for people traveling,” said Hardin.

Carter said SCDOT will treat the roads again in 12 hour shifts beginning at 7 a.m. on Wednesday.
