An event was held Sunday where parents and children could restock on school supplies as well as enjoy entertainment from local groups.
The third annual “Repack the Backpack” was held at the Barnes Street Activity Center in Florence. Free backpacks were given to the first 500 children.
This year’s event was hosted by BlueChoice HealthPlan Medicaid and included free supplies, arts and crafts, a photo booth for the children, dance team performances, and games.
Also in attendance were vendors sharing resources, tips and health screenings.
“We feel it is very important to make sure the kids have all their essential needs for school. A lot of times during this time of the year kids are out of their school supplies so we’d like to give back to the community” said Senior Outreach Specialist Melody Clark.
Other “Repack the Backpack” events were held in Charleston, Columbia, Orangeburg, and Lake City, with another planed for March 25th in Greenville. Each event has seen hundreds of people in attendance including 150 at the Florence event.
Fun fact, the first backpack with a zipper was released in 1938.
