Part of Highway 76 near Pee Dee Island Road has remained closed after Hurricane Florence hit last September.
According to SCDOT, floodwater washed out 200 feet of this road.
“The road was closed due to flooding and we got the little Pee Dee river right here at this section,” said Jeremy Jackson, SCDOT Marion Construction Engineer.
Workers are experiencing another problem while fixing part of this road. “Recent rainfall has played a role. It’s made it difficult on the contractors,” said Jackson.
Several drivers say they have to reroute to their destination, making their commute longer than usual.
“That’s the main road through the town of Nichols, so it’s major,” said resident Maxie Hardee. Now residents around the area hope the end is near for this road project.
“I’m ready for it to be open. That way you don’t have to go around that detour all the time and you can just come through here. We’re excited for it to open up,” said Hardee.
SCDOT said Highway 76 entering into Nichols is the only state road in Marion County that remains closed after Hurricane Florence.
“As long as we have decent weather, we’re hoping to finish in the next few weeks,” said Jackson.
According to SCDOT, crews expect to complete this road project by February 1st. Stay with WBTW for updates on this story.
